Peacefully, on February 5th, 2015 in his 101st year, with family at his side at the Atlantic Baptist Nursing Home, Charlottetown, Flying Officer William James Bruce, WWII veteran pilot slipped the surly bonds of earth, passing the controls to God to fly with His angels in the sky Dad loved so dearly. Growing up in Cape Breton, Bill’s early years were filled with adventure. Like his father, Bill was an avid sailor, racing the 'Billy Boy' at the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club. During WWII, he was a flight instructor for allied pilots and, later, was a flying instructor for civilian pilots in Sydney. As owner of Bras d’Or Airways, operating out of Sydney airport, he flew amphibious aircraft to St. Pierre and Miquelon, Sable Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, providing passenger and air cargo services, as well as hair-raising emergency flights into rural communities across Cape Breton.
No visitation, by family request, with a private committal service at a later date in the Clifton Cemetery, Bunbury, PEI.
If so desired, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the PEI Alzheimers Society.
