We, the family of Sarah Matthews, announce her peaceful passing at the Northside Community Guest Home on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015.
Born on Dec. 9, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Bessie (Pardy) Hayward.
She was a member of Carman United Church and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8 and the Sydney Mines Pensioners' Club. In her younger years she loved to bowl and play darts.
Sarah is survived by her two daughters and two sons, Melvena (Jack) Mann, Ron J. Matthews (Bev), Carolyn and Tom Matthews (Betty). Her seven grandchildren, John (Tammy), Debbie, Ronnie E. (Leanne), Bradley, Robert, Trevor and Todd as well as five great-grandchildren, Terrilynn, John, Jared, Gavin and Lauren.
Besides her parents, Sarah was predeceased by her husband, Hugh; daughter, June and son, Robert; as well as sisters, Beatrice, Greta and Betty.
The family extends their deepest thanks to the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for their care and compassion over the last number of years.
Visitation for Sarah will be held at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place at Carmen United Church on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at 10 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Bible Society, Carman United Church or a charity of choice. Messages and memorials may be directed to the Matthews family by visiting www.fillmoreandwhitman.com.
