Sterling R. Smith, 94, of the Veterans’ Health Centre, Moncton, NB, and formerly of People’s Park Tower, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, March 23, 2015. Born in 1920 in Poplar Grove, PEI, he was the son of the late Leslie and Elizabeth (Inglis) Smith. Sterling was retired from the hardware industry, Sumner Co. (12 years) and Co-op Atlantic (18 years). He was a Veteran of WWII, having served for six years with the Canadian Army and was one of the founding members of the Moncton Probus Club. Sterling was married to the late Vera (Paugh) for 57 years before her death in 1999. They moved to Moncton after the war and raised their family of four girls. They were active in Mountain View United Church. Following their retirement, they enjoyed living during the winter months in Florida. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, he enjoyed woodworking, golf and reading. Sterling is survived by his second wife, Marion (MacConnell) Smith now of Summerside, PEI; daughters, Linda Patterson (Steve) of Fredericton, NB, Sharon LeBlanc (Ray) and Sylvia Stackhouse (Harley), both of Moncton, NB; and Sandra Bell (Randy) of Hampton, NB; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Roy and Donald (Helen); sisters, Hazel Ramsay (Clarence) and Jean Tuplin (George). Arrangements in the hands of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton, (506-858-1995) where a service to celebrate Sterling’s life will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 27, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Paul Steeves officiating. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sterling’s memory to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences at
