Vera MacKay, 99, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Sunday, April 12, 2015.
She was born and raised in Fox Cove, Newfoundland and was the daughter of the late Dennis and Mary (Hann) Long.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Vera came to Sydney to work in 1935, and lived in Whitney Pier for 25 years where she raised her family. She was employed at the City Hospital for a number of years. Attended Bethel Presbyterian Church and was a member Bethel Auxiliary of Whitney Pier. Knitting and crocheting and playing 45s gave her much pleasure and in later years she travelled and spent many winters in St. Pete’s, Florida and summers in Indian Brook.
She is survived by her two daughters, Norma Lysecki and Carol MacKay and daughter-in-law Eleanor Mackay all of Sydney; grandchildren, Kent MacPherson, Halifax, Heather (Darrell) Sidney, Sydney, Marlene (Brian) O’Kane, Japan, and David Lysecki (Meghan MacInnes), Englishtown; great-grandchildren, David John Hanna and Britney Sidney, Madeline and twins, Michael and Thomas O’Kane.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Norman MacKay, father of her four children who passed away in 1945, a month before her fourth child was born. Her two sons, John Wayne MacKay and Norman Wendell MacKay, grandson, Norman MacPherson, sister, Margaret Day, half sisters, Alice, Emily and Mary, half brother, Dennis.
In 1965 Vera married John MacKay who passed away in 2012.
Vera had a long, healthy life and lived in her own home until entering the hospital.
She received excellent care the last four days of her life from Dr. Greg Myatt and all the staff.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place at a later date in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or charity of your choice.
