Stanley Russell Davis

Stanley Russell Davis

It is with sadness that we announce that Stanley Russell Davis, 75, died peacefully Saturday, April 11, in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, NS.
Born in Fox Point, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late Russell and Dorothy (Robinson) Davis. Stan received his education for the most part in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and later attended NSIT in Halifax where he became a licensed electrician, and apprenticed at the Halifax Dockyards, working on submarines and other marine vessels. Stanley married Beverly Brawn in 1962 and together they began a journey that would have them living in British Columbia, where they provided scuba diving lessons and started a marine electronics company with a dear friend, Willie Wilhelmsen. Willie and Stan discovered and patented a revolutionary underwater communication system, which in turn led to many of the medical diagnostic machinery used today. Later moves took them to Ontario and eventually back to the Maritimes where Stan discovered his love for teaching while instructing an electronics course in New Glasgow where he was actually the youngest participant in his class. Stan went on to teach at the Shelburne Regional Vocational School for a number of years before making his final move to employment at his former high school in Amherst, Nova Scotia. In 1987, Stan lost his first wife, Bev, after a long battle with cancer.
Stan spent the remainder of his professional career as a teacher at ARHS where “Mr. D” was loved and fondly remembered by his students. In 1994 he married and started a new life with Joan Cameron. Upon retirement, they founded Focal Point Photography & Framing in Amherst.
A true outdoorsman, Stan could be found clam digging at the shore, or out hunting ducks, geese, and deer. After the death of his good friend and hunting partner, Innis, most of his shooting was restricted to photos taken with his camera.
Stan will be deeply missed by his family and remembered by all as a dedicated teacher, a loyal friend, and a much loved character throughout the community. His magic tricks will keep him alive in the hearts of all the children that passed through his life, and the rest of us will remember his great jokes.
Stan is survived by his loving wife, Joan Cameron; his children, Angela Davis, (Jamie Cameron), James Davis (Leanne Scott), Timothy Davis, (Rose Marie Singh), Terrence Davis, (Jana Schiff); his three grandchildren, John Russell Davis, Dylan Sears, Mallory (Sears) Winters, and a great grandchild, Naomi Sears, and by his sisters, Sylvia (Bill Fairbanks), Dianne (Larry Brown), Ann, Joan (Kent Leslie), and brothers George (Frances), John (Cynthia), Christopher (Lynn), Malcolm (Monette), Andrew (Dale) and sister-in-law, Constanza Davis. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert.
Cremation has taken placed. Visitation will be at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church Street, Amherst, on May 1st from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the First Baptist Church, 90 Victoria Street East, Amherst, NS, on Saturday, May 2, at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society of Canada or the charity of your choice.
