With great sadness the family announces the death of Marilyn Joan (Coutu) Barsky at
on 23rd April, 2015. Marilyn was born in Kincaid, Saskatchewan on November 19th 1924. Her parents were Jennie (MacKenzie) Coutu and Henry Joseph Coutu, QC. She grew up in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan until she, her parents and her younger brother Paul moved to Prince Albert in 1935. She went to school at St. Paul’s Separate School, the Convent at Duck Lake and Sisters of Sion Convent in Prince Albert.

Marilyn was active in sports and enjoyed tennis, skating and golf. She was also an accomplished pianist and singer. After three years working at the Imperial Bank of Commerce Marilyn took a B.A. in English at St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan from 1945 to 1948.

She married Allan Barsky on July 24th 1948. Their first child, Deborah (28th March to 5th April, 1950) was followed by three other children, David Richard, Paula Janice and Linda Joan. Marilyn and her family lived in Prince Albert and spent long, happy summers at their cottage at Sunnyside Beach, Emma Lake. She was often spotted all over the lake, on her bike or walking miles from home. The Barsky house on 21st St. and their cottage at Sunnyside Beach were famous for Marilyn’s lovely gardens, which she tended between her duties as first Lady of Prince Albert and raising three children.

In 1971, Marilyn moved to Saskatoon and resumed her career, working for the federal government, first in Unemployment Insurance and then Canada Employment as a bilingual employment councillor. She made lots for friends among her colleagues, with many of whom she kept in contact for years after she retired.

She is survived by her son, Rick, his wife, Irene and their children, Simon and Lisa; her daughter, Paula and her husband, Michael Davies; her daughter, Linda, her husband, Brian and their children, Jennifer, Richard and Lauren; and her brother Paul Coutu, his wife Vi and their family.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Co-Cathedral, 720 Spadina Crescent, Saskatoon on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to a charity of their choice.
