On May 10, 2015, Russ passed away quietly in his sleep, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, N.S. on Nov. 1, 1935.
He was the son of the late Red Russell and Mabel McLean of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, N.S. Predeceased by his parents, his brother Jackie (J.B) and two sisters in infancy.
Russ will be greatly missed by his wife, Georgie (Smith); sons, Tim (Nicole), Bruce and Terence (Yumiko). He was a devoted grandfather to Zoe, Saskia, Sam, Ky and Hanna. Also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Dolores (Smith) Foley, Ottawa, and Ernie and Deb Smith, Montreal and several nieces and nephews.
Russ was a proud member of the RCAF for 22 years, serving at many bases in Canada and in Fontainebleau, France. After retirement from the CF he worked at the RCMP Forensic Lab in Regina, Sask., retiring in 1999. Russ was very involved in sports, community service and volunteering. He and Georgie moved to Ottawa six years ago to be closer to family.
His great enthusiasm for life, his kindness, wonderful sense of humour, and contagious laugh and smile will be remembered by all who knew him.
Respecting Russ’ wishes, cremation and a private family memorial will take place.
