Donald Bruce Bateman
With his family by his side, Don died peacefully on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, 2015. Don was predeceased by Myrtle, his wife of sixty-nine years; his mother Rose (Bateman) Kain, and his father Bruce Bateman. Don is survived by his sons Allen (Patti) of Regina and Dennis (Mae) of Sundre; his daughter Susan (Terry Hunchuk) of Buffalo Pound Lake; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don was born in Moose Jaw on June 15, 1922 and grew up on his family’s farm east of Moose Jaw. On September 17, 1945, Don married Myrtle, a young schoolteacher who boarded with his family. They moved to Moose Jaw to start their life together and raise a family. Early in his career, Don worked with the National Light and Power Company learning to become a power engineer. Around 1953, he joined the Boiler Inspection Insurance Company of Canada as an inspector. In that role, he travelled the province, inspecting many diverse operations to assure compliance with insurance standards. Don retired in 1987, which opened the door for travelling. He and Myrtle enjoyed many adventures in their motor home, often with grandchildren. Don and Myrtle were also avid round and square dancers who shared many good times with their dance friends. Don was an avid lifelong learner who especially loved space exploration. He regularly communicated with engineers at NASA who kept him informed of the space shuttle maintenance program. He also participated in the civilian Mars lander program, for which he received a certificate. His interest in, and capacity for, learning was widespread. For example, he enjoying following the operation of the Panama Canal, the round-the-world voyage of the Picton Castle sailboat, and the dinosaur discoveries at Eastend, SK. As a Dad, Don was always encouraging and interested in, and supportive of, his kids’ pursuits. He was kind, respectful, and a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed. The Funeral Service will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel on Friday June 26, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Reverend David Moore will officiate. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. In living memory of Don, a memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
