Following this he did two years of Post Fellowship study in surgery and research in Glasgow and Edinburgh during which time he was the recipient of Samuel MacLaughlin and Dennis Fellowships. On his return to Halifax he had appointments at both Dalhousie and the VGH and was a consulting Surgeon at the IWK, Camp Hill and Halifax Infirmary.
In 1977 he became an assistant professor and in 1986 became an associate professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. He held numerous positions and served on a number of committees such as Undergraduate Surgical Education, Liver Transplant, Medical Records, and was Chief of Surgery A. He set up a research lab to study bile acid metabolism and gall bladder disease and was funded by grants from the Medical Research Council, Dalhousie and Dept of Surgery. He set up the laparoscopic program for the VGH. For 20 years he was deeply involved with the surgical training of medical students and was very proud of the levels achieved by his students.
He “retired” to North River Bridge in 1996. Since then, he practised surgery at the Inverness Memorial Consolidated Hospital, a time he thoroughly enjoyed. He also did several locum tenens in Newfoundland and Labrador.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge serving in the choir, a term on the Board of managers and as an Elder (retired). He was a member of the Stewards of St. Ann’s Harbour Association. He was a member of the St. Marks Lodge #35 and attained the 32nd degree.
He enjoyed working his farm, hosting groups of trout and salmon fishermen who fished the North River, storytelling with family and friends, watching his favourite football team, the New England Patriots and following the soccer matches. He was influential in having the condition of the North River repaired.
