Peter Wieler

Peter Wieler

Peter Wieler, age 89, peacefully passed from this earth into the presence of Jesus on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2015. Dad, was born to Cornelius & Judith Wieler on May 12, 1926, in the McMahon area. He was the last surviving child of 17 children: only 6 grew into adulthood, 10 died in infancy, and his brother John died at the age of 13. In 1928, they moved to the village of Rosenhof where dad grew up and later on farmed with his parents. He had a limited education but was privileged to attend Lens East School and acquired grade 8. He kept excellent farm records, (enjoyed numbers), and was a prolific reader. Helen Krahn caught his attention at an early age. During their courtship, he arranged for mom to be picked up in an airplane. They were married on October 29, 1950 (just short of 65 years), in Rosenhof, on the yard where dad built a house from wood salvaged from a barn…still standing to this day. There were 7 children born with the youngest child, Murray, being stillborn. Dad was baptized in the Sommerfeld Church, and then received assurance of salvation during the great revival of 1958. Because of this decision, a great heritage of Christian faith was passed on to us, for which we his children, will be forever thankful! Together with mom, they were founding members of the Wymark Evangelical Mennonite Church. He was actively involved in the church in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher/superintendent. In later years, when dad and mom moved to Swift Current, they attended Cornerstone EMC. He also volunteered with MCC and MDS. As a young married man, dad was a carpenter; he worked at Sears; and eventually farming fulltime, diversifying with laying chickens, selling eggs in Swift Current to local businesses. Dad retired from farming in his fifties, but remained keenly aware of the land. Dad was a do-it-yourself kind of guy – fixing machinery, “jack–of–all-trades”. He tried to teach us everything he knew and expected us to learn quick…he was not a man of great patience. He also loved to own/drive a new car and always pushed the speed limit. Dad enjoyed travel. There were several family vacations, including camping in Osoyoos and the hot springs in Malta. He spent time in Haiti with Mennonite Disaster Relief. Dad and mom travelled as a young couple to Europe. He enjoyed and made a great effort to visit us children…numerous trips to Austria to visit Rosanne and her family, Arizona to spend time with Ron and his family, Audrey in BC, Lorraine in Alberta, and recently Rosanne in Alberta. We will miss his quirky one-liners, his unique sense of humour and his happy whistle. Peter is survived by his wife Helen; and his children, David (Margaret) - Kerry, Jordi: Ronald (Joyce) – Jodi, Jolene, Jaki, Janelle and Reagan: Lorraine (Les Funk) – Tara Lee, Brittany, Rocky and Kacey: Rosanne (Ron Poffenroth) – Benji, Andrea, Michael, and Jordan: Lois (Gordon Martens) – Jessica, Derek, Stephanie: Audrey (Ed Schlamp) – Destiny, Clint, Danielle, and Cody; this totals 22 grandchildren (numerous spouses) and 33 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one grandchild, Christopher, in 1979. A heartfelt thank you to the Home Care services of Swift Current; Dad received excellent care on a daily basis!
