Elizabeth Derksen

Elizabeth Derksen

Elizabeth Luella Derksen, age 92, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, SK. Elizabeth was born on August 6, 1923, to Johann & Maria Nickel in Arkadak, a Mennonite colony in the province of Saratov in Russia. She was the eighth of nine children. In 1925, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Main Centre, SK. Elizabeth loved literature, especially poetry, and music, interests that sustained her throughout her life. She met Henry Derksen at the Swift Current Bible School, where both were students. They were married on October 4, 1942. Elizabeth & Henry farmed near Main Centre until 1984, when they moved to an acreage outside Swift Current. Ultimately they joined the Bentley retirement community in 2007. After Henry’s death in 2008, Elizabeth moved to Alberta to live with her daughter & son-in-law, Betty & Ed, for 17 months. Thereafter, she took up residence in Riverview Estates in Swift Current. Elizabeth was a preacher’s daughter, and the faith she embraced profoundly formed her values, her view of the world, and her relationships with others. She touched many lives. To many of us, she was the very embodiment of love. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Henry; her parents, Johann & Maria; her eight siblings, Mary, Katherine, Margaret, Anne, Nettie, John, Anton and Jake; grandchildren, Jason and Connie; and by a great-grandson, Brady. She will live on in the hearts of her children, Shirley (Hildor) Braun, Betty (Ed) Nickel, John (Kristen) Derksen, Hazel (Ray) Scheirer, Judy (Bernie) Friesen, Dennis (Vickie) Derksen, and Faith (Dennis) Klassen; her sixteen grandchildren; and her twenty-nine great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, September 19, 2015, at 3:00 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating. The musicians for the service were pianists, John Derksen and Leanne McConnell, along with flutists, Kristen Derksen and Joanne Storsley. “Now Thank We All Our God” and “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” were sung by the congregation under the direction of John Redekop. The Interment preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Capeland Cemetery, Main Centre, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Scott Derksen, Jeff Klassen, Chris Noto, Neil Braun, Earl Braun and Ryan Scheirer. In memory of Elizabeth Derksen, donations made to Gideons International or to West Bank Bible Camp would be appreciated by the family. The family is grateful to the Swift Current Funeral Home for their assistance in the Funeral Service arrangements. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
