ROSS, Avis Florene, June 30, 1930 – September 21, 2015. It is with great sorrow the family of Avis Ross announces her passing on Monday, September 21, 2015 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She was a resident of Bay Side Home for the past few years and previously of Stoney Island. She is survived by and the much loved mother of Richard (Helene), Lester (Trudy), Chris (Elaine); Grammie to Shawn (Jamie), Ryan (Christine), Sabrina (Laurie), Krista (James), Jeremey (Jennifer), Adrienne (Joe); step-grandchildren, Sandy Lee (Derrick), Cody; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; Aunt Avis to many nieces and nephews; loved sisters, Gertrude (Layton) Nickerson, Joyce (Wilbert) Sears, Marie (Sheldon) Nickerson, Juanita (Donnie) Shortliffe; sisters-in-law, Jean (Clyde) Ross, Elaine (Gerald) Ross; and brother-in-law, James (Pearle) Quinlan. Avis was predeceased by her parents, James and Isaline Ross; husband, Lawrence; brothers, Stanley, Allen; brothers-in-law, Layton Nickerson, Clyde Ross, Gerald Ross; sister-in-law, Pearle; and special nephew, Bruce Smith. Avis spent most of her falls and springs on Ellenwood Island with her husband and children during the lobster season. She cooked and cared for her sons as well as her husband and hired men. She enjoyed the close knit community of island life and her long lasting friendships from this lifestyle. Her faith and church have remained her constant source of strength and enjoyment for many years. The Atlantic Cemetery Club and Tuesday nights spent at the hall quilting was a great social time for her. Avis blessed her family with her beautiful quilts, wool socks and mittens for all special occasions. She loved visits from everyone but always her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She treasured her visits from her special friends and phone calls that tended to be rather long at times. The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 24, at 2 p.m. from the Stoney Island Baptist Church with Wayne Crowell officiating. Interment to follow in the Atlantic Cemetery, Stoney Island. The family would like family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Stoney Island Baptist Church, Atlantic Cemetery Club or Bay Side Home as Avis requested.
