Jacob Wiens

Jacob Wiens

Our Dad's wish to leave this earth and his desire to be with his Lord and Savior came to be on Sunday, September 20, 2015, at the age of 98. Jacob (Jake) was born on August 14, 1917, in Schantzenfeld in the Wymark District. He was born the 7th child to Isaac D. Wiens & Elizabeth Martens. In 1923, the family moved to Mexico, resisting the government's initiative of change in the school system. However, after a few difficult years in Mexico, they returned to the Wymark District where they resettled on a farm in Rhinefeld. Dad went to German school for 3 years, then attended Iris School, and jokingly claimed he had half his Grade 8 (which really meant Grade 4)! He married Marie Hiebert on November 10, 1940. They lived with Jake's parents for one year and then moved to their own home in small Rhinefeld. Dad farmed with his dad for two years and took on custom combining to earn extra money. In 1946, Dad purchased 2 ½ quarters of land in the Wymark District where he and Mary began farming on their own. Dad continued to do custom work to earn extra cash and gradually purchased more farm land. In 1958, they built a small corner store/gas station on the home place. They ran a very successful family business. The store was especially busy at Christmas, when Dad would bring in up to 900 lbs. of assorted Christmas candy. They would make up Christmas bags to be handed out to the school children after the Christmas concert. Fall was butchering time and Dad was well known for his expertise in making Mennonite and liver sausage. Together Jake & Mary had 8 children, however, in 1966 Dad was widowed when Mary and Liz were tragically killed in a car accident. Dad reacquainted with Margaret Wieler and they married on July 23, 1967. Margaret had 5 children from a previous marriage and together they blended a family of 12 children, which was no easy task. Together, they continued to run the small corner store until 1970. In 1978, Jake & Margaret built their dream home adjacent to the original family home. Jake's sons began to take on the family farming and Dad was able to explore other interests like fishing with friends and grandchildren. He also discovered he liked gardening and cooking. He even tried his hand at baking bread, but quickly admitted that he would leave that task to his wife. In 1996, Jake & Margaret moved to Swift Current where they quickly learned the pleasure of ordering takeout food. They also enjoyed eating out with family and friends. Dad lost his second wife, Margaret, to cancer, in 2004. He remained in their home on MacKenzie Drive for several years before purchasing a suite at Riverview Estates in 2009. Dad spent the remainder of his years enjoying the comforts at Riverview and we all enjoyed 'Grampa's Restaurant' there. Dad was an amazing story teller and his sense of humor was evident in the stories he told. As dad was an accomplished business man himself, he was always willing to share his wisdom and knowledge with anyone who asked. We will miss being able to consult with him and will always treasure the insight and advice that he freely gave. Dad passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital on September 20, 2015, after a brief illness. At the time of his passing, Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Mary, and daughter, Elizabeth Neufeld, in 1966; his second wife, Margaret, in 2004; his parents, Isaac & Elizabeth Wiens; and all of his siblings, Jacob Wiens (in infancy), Peter Wiens (Helen), Anna Friesen (Jacob), Isaac Wiens (Tina), Elizabeth Wiens (Jake), John Wiens (Tena), Mary Funk (Abe), and Helen Friesen (Bill).
