It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Helen Marie Battiste, age 64, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015 at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, following a brief illness.
Born in Potlotek on Nov. 15, 1950, Helen was a daughter of the late Jacob and Madeline (Nicholas) Battiste. Helen enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed getting together for Sunday dinners, she enjoyed playing cards and was an avid bingo player. Helen had a generous heart as she opened her home to many foster children over the years, even up to the time of her death. Helen was a gifted quilt maker and basket weaver and shared many of her quilts with her family.
Helen is survived by her sons, John Noel (Twila) Battiste, Eskasoni and Cory Duncan Dylan Battiste, Potlotek; grandchildren, Annabelle, Barrett, Makeena, Eskasoni; Stephanie Issac, Potlotek and godchildren, Letitia Goodwin, Potlotek and Roy Julian, Dartmouth; brothers, Vincent 'Boi' Battiste, Anthony 'Tony' Battiste and Peter Battiste, all of Potlotek; sisters, Mary Bridget Goodwin, Potlotek Elizabeth Benoit, Potlotek; Alfreda (Barry) Worthen, Mount Uniake; Marlene Julian, Potlotek; Harriet Battiste, West Bay; Aunt Annie Clare Isaac, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jacob Joseph, Maine, USA; maternal grandmother, Mary Susan Marshall and paternal grandparents, Peter and Nancy (Francis) Battiste
Resting in Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Chapel in Potlotek on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Funeral mass will be offered Saturday at 11 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head with Rev. Antolin Asor officiating. Burial to follow in Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery, Barra Head. Following the committal a Salitè will be held in the Potlotek Community Hall.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
