It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mildred Alexis Brown announce her peaceful passing Nov. 8, 2015 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney.
She was born in Mill Creek, Cape Breton, Nov. 12, 1921 to Edward Jessome and Cassie (MacDougall) Jessome.
Millie, as she was best known, was the second of 13 children born into a loving family.
She graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Glace Bay in 1943 and went on to study public health nursing at the University of Ottawa. She worked in Ingonish as a public health nurse, St. Rita Maternity Hospital and, in the latter part of her nursing career, at Braemore Home.
Millie enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, needle point, news and public affairs and, most importantly, she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had great faith and deep devotion to St. Theresa and The Holy Mother. She had a keen interest in politics and enthusiastically exercised her right to vote on Oct. 19th. Millie loved to sing, entertain and always enjoyed a good laugh. She was bright and engaged until her final hour.
Left to mourn are her daughters, Carol Anne (Bill) Sidney and Coleen (Scott) Logan, her sons Alan (Kathy), Shane (Debbie), Liam (Holly); son-in-law, Larry Stillwell; her siblings, Barry (Delores) Jessome, Pat (Bill) Harrietha, Donald (Sheila) Jessome and sisters-in-law, Marie, Rose and Joan.
She will be missed by her 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Daniel Brown, who passed on Nov. 6, 1967, her dear daughter, Jane Alexis (Brown) Stillwell, who lost her battle with cancer on Nov. 6 of this year and by her sisters, Peg Taylor, Agnes Jessome, Josephine Merlin, Clare Jessome, Mary Eileen 'Lynn' Hines and brothers, Daniel, Lawrence (Loni), Sandy, and Gus.
The family would like to thank her many medical professionals who helped her along the way especially Dr. Susan Gowan, Dr. Paul Murphy, Dr. John Sullivan and the staff at Soldier's Cove, (Harbourstone) who lovingly cared for her over the last six months.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Chant's Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Nov. 17 from 3-5 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bras d'Or on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.
