Vernon Bruce

BRUCE, Vernon Victor - age 87 of Nictaux, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Ivany Place Nursing Home, Bedford. He was a son of the late Arthur and Sardinia (Robar) Bruce and grew up in Bloomington where he went to school and Sunday school and sang in the choir. Vernon started work in his father’s mill at the age of 14 and then went to work at Canadian Canners and then Scotian Gold, Coldbrook where he worked for 22 years. He also worked in Roger’s Mill hauling logs in the summers. Vernon was married in 1946 to Veulah Ward and moved to Bloomington, where he built his own home at night and on Saturdays, never working on Sunday. It was very hard getting to work from Bloomington, so they moved to Nictaux with their four children, where they lived for 13 years. In 1970 they sold their home and bought Funland Canteen and Mini-Golf and paved their own track for a Go-Cart track. They joined the Nictaux Church and Choir and Vernon spent six years as a deacon and chairman of the nomination committee. While building the Christian Family Center, Vernon, his wife and their family put on the first Gospel concert to raise money for the Center. Music was always a very important part of the family and Vernon played many instruments and passed the love of music to his children, several of whom have made a profession of it. They later moved to a large home in Berwick to be close to Vernon’s work at the Berwick Bakery where he stayed until retiring after 21 years. They joined the Berwick Church, where they joined the choir and Vernon served as a deacon, trustee and chairman of ushers. They travelled to Florida, Vancouver, Nashville and Ontario. Finally they settled back in a small bungalow in Nictaux. Vernon is survived by daughters, Linda Bruce and Darlene MacLean, both of Dartmouth; sons, Richard Bruce, Wilmot and Bradford Bruce, Halifax; sisters, Thelma Bruce, Paradise; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife the former, Veulah Ward; sisters, Marie Hannam, Goldie Trask, Vera Anderson, Angie Willet, Ivy Bezanson and Wanita Ryan; brothers, Walter, Laurie, Ira, Kenneth and Leslie. Visitation was held Saturday, November 21, 2015 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448, where the funeral service was held Sunday, November 22, 2015 with Rev. Leon Langille officiating. Interment will be in the Nictaux Cemetery. Donations in memory of Vernon may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
