MARJORY BORLAND, CA, BSc, MSc

MARJORY BORLAND, CA, BSc, MSc

It is with great sadness that the family announces Marjory’s passing at the age of 85 years. She died after a brief illness on December 20, 2015 at Totem Lodge in Sechelt, B.C. surrounded by loved ones.
Marjory is survived by sons Bruce (Lucie), Ross (Treve) and daughters Elizabeth (Vicki) and Lindsay. She is also survived by three grandchildren Marie-Hélène, Avys and Rove. She was predeceased by Alastair, her husband of 57 years, who passed away earlier in 2015. We know that Mum and Dad are together again.
Mum was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. It was in Scotland that she met her future husband, Alastair. Mum followed Dad to Vancouver and they were married in Canada in 1957. Mum and Dad lived in North Vancouver for 30 years before moving to their dream retirement home on the Sunshine Coast.
Mum was a very accomplished woman, earning her CA designation in Scotland before immigrating to Canada. She worked briefly before taking time off to raise the kids. As the kids got older, Mum went looking for new challenges and returned to university where she obtained both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in science. Along the way she found time to travel to Hawaii, Australia and Alaska as well as to Cantley, Quebec and Victoria to see her children. She was also passionate about her quilting and painting and was very involved in the quilting guilds in North Vancouver and later on the Sunshine Coast. Mum’s quilts are true works of art. Family always came first though, and Mum and Dad made many sacrifices for their young children and then continued to provide love and support as they grew older.
Mum was a proud Scot her whole life, often telling us “How the Scots Invented the Modern World”. The tradition of Christmas dinners and then weekly lunches with other Scottish expatriates lasted over 50 years. On the Coast they made more good friends in Margaret and Norman Waddell. We have many fond memories of Mum’s great meals at the kitchen table with the extra privilege of being able to watch the hockey game on Saturday night. In later years, the tradition became a glass of sherry for Mum, followed by Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
The last few years were hard but we know that you are at peace now. We will miss you terribly, Mum.
A viewing will be held at Devlin Funeral Home in Gibsons, B.C. on Saturday January 2, 2015 from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
A final thank you to all the staff at Totem Lodge in Sechelt and Dr. Mundy who helped ensure Mum’s passing was peaceful and dignified.
