Percival Spencer

~~~SPENCER~~~
William Percival "Percy" Spencer was born on the family homestead on June 30, 1929, the youngest child and last surviving member of a family of eight children born to William Spencer and Esther Matthews, English immigrants. He began his schooling at age eight, first at Belgrave, then Fairy Glen, completing grade eight. Farming began in earnest after that, alongside his father and older brother. In 1952, Percy married Patricia May Glover. Two years later they moved to the Spencer homestead at SW 36-46-18 W2. Through their devoted partnership they worked to transform the stark prairie into a farm operation that supported and nurtured their growing family. Percy worked at some off farm jobs, notably the B&B gang of the CPR Railway, for a local plumbing company, and as a bus driver for the Melfort School Unit. He made time to serve his community through local building projects such as the Gronlid hockey rink, sitting on the board of the Fairy Glen Coop, and acting as secretary for the Carrot River Valley Lutheran Church. He led a 4-H group and coached youth hockey. The final twenty years of life were spent in retirement in his home in Fairy Glen, with Pat, where Percy cultivated many hobbies such as gardening, woodworking, knitting, lumberjacking, fishing and hunting. He spent many happy hours playing cards and drinking tea with neighbours, children and grandchildren.
Percy is survived by his devoted wife of sixty three years, Pat and their seven children,; Roberta Spencer, Laurie (Terry) Danyluk, Reg (Barb) Spencer, Lynn (Kathy) Spencer, Trish Spencer (Ben Nordin), Colleen (Robin) Kirkham and Bud (Sarah MacFadden) Spencer; sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
On December 18, 2015, at the age of 86, Percy passed away peacefully at home in the care of his loving family.
A Memorial Service for Percy was held from the Melfort United Church, Melfort, SK on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Dawn Myrfield and Rev. Emmanuel Menyereye officiating. The interment will take place at a later date in the Carrot River Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were considered to be “Everyone Who Knew & Loved Percy” and the Urn Bearers were Percy’s Grandsons. The eulogy was given by Roberta Spencer and the organist for the service was Bernice McCosh.
