Cliff was born in New Waterford on Jan. 7, 1949; as he tells it, in a driving snow storm. He grew up on Heelen Street and attended Saint Agnes school, going on to Vocational School where he graduated with his millwright trade. Over the years, he took all opportunities to continue his education, with courses at St. F.X. University and the Beaton Institute. Cliff returned to his love of learning and in 2005, graduated with honours from the University College of Cape Breton with a Bachelor of Community Studies Degree, attaining Dean’s list standing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Helen (nee Aucoin) Dornig; brothers, Stanley and Raymond as well as sisters, Evelyn Blanchette and Jeanette Shea. Clifford is survived by his beloved family, brother, Russ and sisters, Marie Barry and Helen (Dale) Poirier. He is also survived by two couples who were not only in-laws but friends, Cathy (Miles) and George Smith, Johnny and Donna (Stubbert) Miles; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and dear friends who meant so much to him.
Clifford was married to Linda (Miles) on Sept. 1, 1972. They shared 43 years together creating a warm and loving home for their children, Rachelle and Clifford. In 1997 they welcomed their beloved grandson, Cameron. Clifford was incredibly proud of his children and grandson saying, when he thinks of them he is nothing but happy.
For many years Clifford worked for DEVCO but found his true calling when he joined the teaching faculty of the College of the North Atlantic in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. He loved to share his knowledge, helping those around him succeed. He was admired and appreciated by both his students and co-workers for all he brought to the classroom.
Cliff was a known political advocate for social justice. He worked to impress upon others the importance of equality and fairness. He never backed down from a political debate, regardless of how hot.
Cliff practiced the path of Shambhala Buddhism. It is the Shambhala view that every human being has a fundamental nature of goodness, warmth and intelligence. Through his practice, he made many friends and gained a sense of peace not only as he lived, but as he died.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, the family have asked memorial donations be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
After the service, friends and family are welcome for refreshments at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall on Convent Street in New Waterford.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
