Florence MacLean-Kanary
The sudden illness and unexpected death on Jan. 22, 2016, of Florence MacLean-Kanary, age 71, has left her family and friends shocked and saddened.
Florence was the third child of five born to Flora Mae (Gillis) and Peter F. MacLean, Iona. Florence graduated high school from Rankin Memorial in Iona, and received a BA in 1965 and a BEd in 1966 from St.F.X. University. After graduation, Calgary Separate School Board beckoned and she, along with six St.F.X. friends arrived in Calgary where for two years Florence taught and met her future husband Joseph Kanary. After marriage, their homes included London, Montreal and finally Halifax where, when their two daughters were school age, Florence returned to her teaching career and taught at a variety of schools within Halifax Regional
School Board.
In her work, Florence displayed a strong devotion to her students and their families, an infinite capacity for problem solving and a jovial, hearty disposition which was frequently reflected in her quick sense of humour. Florence took her teaching responsibilities seriously and was a constant learner, completing her MEd in 1989 and Post Master courses in 1994 at Mount St.Vincent University. Florence was an avid reader, a CBC listener and viewer, a theatre goer, a lover and sharer of music. She applied her forward thinking and questioning mind to politics, education, and community events. She was an organizer like no other. Her most recent effort was in Oct. 2015 when she orchestrated the return of her life long friends to celebrate their St.F.X. 50th Homecoming Reunion. Her family will miss her planning and organizing numerous family events as well as the yearly attendance at the Barra MacNeil Christmas concerts, and October trips to Celtic Colours in Cape Breton.
Florence was predeceased by her parents and her brother Alexander.
Florence is survived by her caring husband Joseph, her loving daughters Leah Kanary, and Lucy/Marc deJong and her grandchildren, Nicholas, Henry, Claire, Finn and Lola. She will be missed by her three sisters, Anne/Lawrence Nestman, Theresa MacLean/Blaise, Helen/Jim MacDonald, nieces Lara and Natasha, nephews Peter, Shamus and Scott, her aunt Teresa Morrison, her cousin/aunt Ada MacLean, numerous cousins and
life long friends.
Florence’s family and friends will remember her ginger cookies at Christmas time, her cherry cake and her tea biscuits for every occasion. Joseph will miss her constant companionship and their lively discussions after CBC’s Power and Politics. Leah and Lucy will miss her constant support and guidance. Her grandchildren
will miss the special connections she fostered with them and her affirmation: “Shenya loves you to the North Pole and South Pole and back.” They will miss their daily FaceTime with her and her reminder to them that we are each other’s guardian angels, comforting words that they will cherish into their adult lives. Her large community of friends will remember Florence's warmth, generous spirit and thoughtful insights.
Throughout her career, Florence mentored aspiring teachers, actively fostering their growth and often maintaining relationships beyond graduation to support their entry into the profession. To perpetuate and celebrate Florence's enduring passion for learning and teaching, donations may be made to the Florence MacLean-Kanary Memorial Fund, c/o University Affairs, Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, B3M 2J6.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral and burial will take place in Iona at a later date. Arrangements by: Donald K.Walker Funeral Directors Ltd.
