It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, John Spencer, at the age of 71. John passed away with his loving family by his side on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Aubrey and Marion (Butts) Spencer; and was a member of St. John’s United Church, Port Morien.
John was a fisherman by trade, fishing his whole life out of Port Morien. In his spare time he loved working on cars and trucks and was known by many as their backyard mechanic; he could rebuild a vehicle when everyone else believed it was impossible. He always looked forward to his weekly 1 p.m. Saturday gatherings in his garage with all of his friends. He also enjoyed NASCAR, jigsaw puzzles, darts and Christmas; especially decorating, his motto was; the more lights the better. He had a great personality and was loved by all. He will be truly missed by all of his friends at the Sterling Tim Hortons and will be remembered by all as a great family man, whose true loves in life were his wife, their children, his grandchildren and his dog “Ginger”.
John will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 43 years, Ethel (Jewells); daughter, Lorine (Marcel) Gaigneur; son, Johnny (Tracey), all of Port Morien; granddaughters, Lyssa, Kara, Rachelle; grandson, Kalen and siblings, Helen, Glace Bay, Audrey (John), Donkin and Allie (Donelda), Morien.
Besides his parents, John was also predeceased by a sister. Victoria (Tory) Clements.
In honouring John’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bob Biggar officiating.
Memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center, the Palliative Care Society or a charity of one’s choice.
At this time we would like to give a sincere thank you, to the VON and the staffs of the palliative care unit and the Cape Breton Cancer Center at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the loving and compassionate care shown to John.
