Helena (Helen) Ens

Helena (Helen) Ens

Date de décès : 21 janvier 2016

Helena (Helen) Ens, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 21, 2016, at the Herbert Integrated Health Facility. Mom was born on November 29, 1921, in Rosenhof, SK (along with her twin sister, Sarah) to Gerhardt & Sarah Rempel, the fifth child in a family of 14. She started working as a nanny/housekeeper at the age of 13. On November 15th, 1942, just two weeks shy of her 21st birthday, she married Cornelius Ens. They were blessed with four children, Betty (John) Fehr, Gordon Ens, Sally Coward, and Sheila (Jake) Martens. Mom was a talented, self-taught seamstress. Many times she would make the whole family new clothes from a bag full of donated hand-me-downs. Most of us children remember being handed a razor blade and a garment and told to either cut off the buttons, take out the zipper, or salvage the seam binding, shoulder pads or whatever could be reused. She was also very resourceful when doing any kind of home project. If she didn’t have what she needed, she improvised. For instance, she needed brown paint for a certain project and only had white paint at home. No problem. She would use whatever was at her disposal to tint it to the desired colour, whether it be hair dye, shoe polish, cocoa, or whatever else she could find that would give the desired shade of brown she was looking for. She started working at McIntosh Furniture in the drapery department, making drapes for many homes in the area. She also worked at Pfaff and Décor Complete, and even spent some time in Shaunavon teaching a drapery class at the Community College. Mom worked hard for everything that Her and Dad had, but she always had time for fun too. Whether it was out picking saskatoons (which apparently she thought was great fun) or spending time with family or friends having a singalong. Mom loved to sing…she sang while she worked, she sang while she sewed, she sang in the car, she even sang as recently as this past Christmas at the nursing home in Herbert. In May 2011, Mom was moved to the Herbert Heritage Manor where she lived for 4½ years, and in November 2015, she was moved to the Herbert Integrated Health Facility. She received excellent care at both of these facilities, which was greatly appreciated by her family. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius; her son-in-law, Henry Coward; her step-grandson, Tyler Eckford; her parents, Gerhardt & Sarah Rempel; her brothers, Bernhard, Peter, George, Bill, John; and by her sisters, Elizabeth, Tina. She is survived by her children; her 11 grandchildren; her 28 great-grandchildren; and by her sisters, Sarah Wiebe, Ann Rempel, Susan Neufeld, Margaret Schlamp, Marie Rempel and Christine Neufeld. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 11:00 am from the East Side Church of God, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Bryon Bezanson officiating. The pianist for the service was Mary Henderson. “When the Roll is Called up Yonder” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” were sung by the congregation. Scripture reading of Psalm 23 was read by Michael Zanderzwaag. The obituary was read by grandson, Randy Fehr and ‘Memories of Grandma’ were shared on behalf of the family by granddaughter, Kim Truesdale. Chosen music for the processional was, “Whispering Hope” by Jim Reeves and for the recessional, “Far Side Banks of Jordan” by Jimmy Fortune. The Interment Service was held at the Rosenhof Cemetery with the following grandchildren serving as pallbearers, Jolene Resch, Tammy Krahn, Darcy Fehr, Gord Fehr, Teresa Landry and Trevor Giesbrecht. In memory of Helen Ens, donations made to the Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
