It is with heartfelt sadness, that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Ann Catherine Roper, 93, formerly of Dominion and a longtime resident of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Dominion, Annie was the daughter of the late John and Isabell (Campbell) McIntyre and was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Bridgeport.
Annie was employed at the Glace Bay General Hospital before retiring after 25 years of service. Our mom enjoyed playing bingo, listening to music, and she loved to dance with her friend Effie. She was an exceptional woman; strong, gentle, tenacious, hardworking and as most women have done throughout time, sacrificed much for the people she loved and befriended. Mom lived in her own home for over 70 years and was a member of the Row Street A.C.
Mom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons, Ernie (Norma) Glace Bay, Dougie (Brenda) Camrose, Alta.; daughter-in-law, Patsy Roper, Glace Bay; grandchildren: Ernie’s children, Ernie Jr., Karen, Kevin, Linda; Wayne’s children, Carol Anne, Billy; Donnie’s daughter, Donna; Doug’s children, Sarah, Seanah, John and Cori Lynn; 19 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great–grandchildren. Ann is also survived by her beautiful sisters and brother, Colista (Tommy) Poirier, Dominion, Lena (Martin) Sweeney, Gardiner Mines and Bernie (Carol) MacIntyre, Dominion; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides her parents, Anne was also predeceased by her husband, Donald; son, Donnie and daughter-in-law, Norma (Reid) and son, Wayne; sisters, Vangie, Mary, Margaret; brothers, Daniel, affectionately known as “Dupper Dan”, Harvey, John W. “Son” and Cecil; granddaughters: Ernie and Norma’s daughter, Phyllis and Donnie and Norma’s daughter, Anne Margaret.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Interment will be at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Annie’s memory may be made to, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
Special thanks to the staff of the Glace Bay Hospital, for the compassionate care they provided Annie during her hospital stay.
