It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, brother, John E. Youden, age 95, at the Harbourview Hospital, Veteran Wing, Sydney on Friday, March 11, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Brigus, Nfld., he was son of the late John and Margaret (McDiarmid) Youden. He was the second youngest in the family of nine.
He served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders in England, France, Holland and Italy from 1941 to 1945.
He was a bricklayer and stone mason by trade. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126, Westmount, as well the past president and vice president. He was a charter member of the Westmount Fire Dept. and the Canadian Forresters. He was a member of the Sydney Curling Club.
John received the Democracy Medal and several other prestigious awards during his lifetime.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church.
He had a great wit, he was a great dad and husband. He will be truly missed.
John is survived by his three children, Dianne (Elie) Blondin, Leonard (Connie) Youden, Karen (Rene) Lauzon, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Olive Leyte, brother–in-law, Leo (Jessie) Moulins; sisters-in-law, Adeline and Evelyn, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Anne (Moulins) Youden, several brothers and sisters.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016 at Holy Rosary Parish with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating. Interment to follow.
