It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Sigut, 96, on March 14, 2016. He was the son of the late Thomas and Antonia (Valek) Sigut of Whitney Pier.
George graduated from the Colorado School of Mines, Boulder, Colorado as mining engineer and started his mining career with the Dominion Coal Company. He then worked for the federal government in Halifax and returned to Cape Breton to work at the Atomic Energy of Canada Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay where he remained until his retirement. George was the secretary-treasurer of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia for 23 years. He was a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM), a life member of Engineers Nova Scotia and the American Institute of Mining Engineering, and a 50-year member of both CIM and The Mining Society of Nova Scotia.
George is survived by his loving wife Florence (Cheeter), son Dr. Aaron Sigut and his wife Deana, London, Ont., grandchildren, Claudia and Leo, sisters Julia and Lillian, both of Sydney and also many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brothers Alan, Charles, and Joseph, sisters Stella and Hilda Sigut and niece Arlene Sigut.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service for George will be held on March 21, 2016, at 11 a.m., in Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River, with Fr. Duaine Devereaux officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home.
