Betty Mary L. Navaux

Her family regrets to announce that Betty passed away March 2, 2016 at the age of 75 in Truro following a battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Smith with her husband Greg and their children Kyle & Madison (Kemptville, Ont.), her son Robert MacLellan with his wife Heather Kirk (Brookfield, N.S.) and her brother, John Navaux and his wife Donna (Moncton, N.B.). She was pre-deceased by her parents, Georges and Suzanne Navaux (Riverview, N.B.)

Born Jan 18 1941 in Charleroi, Belgium, Betty immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952 at the age of 11. The daughter of adventuresome parents, her father Georges, a Belgian Air Force pilot at the onset of WWII, counted boldly walking out of a German POW camp among his many adventures.

Inheriting that familial trait for bold decisions and “never saying no”, Betty was not one to shy away from a challenge, agonize over prior decisions – or put down long-term roots.

An avid traveler, she would frequently travel to all avenues of Europe, the Balkans and the Caribbean - often solo and well into her 70s. An enthusiastic painter into her 60s, Betty maintained a love of design and the arts throughout her life.

Her wish was that her ashes, together with those of her beloved deceased K9 companion Penny, be combined and scattered at favoured locations in N.S. and Europe. A private gathering for family and friends, most of whom were with her during her final days, is being planned in the Truro area.

In lieu of cards, flowers, or messages of condolence, the family is requesting that those wishing to make such gestures instead focus those energies on having, or encouraging those they care for to have, the often 'put-off' mammograms, ultrasounds and pap smears so necessary in the early detection of the disease(s) that claimed the life of a beloved sister and mother.
