McNAMARA, BERNARD
Bernard McNamara of Salisbury passed away at The Moncton Hospital on April 17, 2016 at the age of 73, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bernie put up a valiant fight and remained at home until Sunday evening. 
Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, NS on June 3, 1942, he was the son of the late Daniel and Freda (Lavangie) McNamara. 
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Wreatha, daughters; Bernice Prickette of Kelowna, BC, Melinda (Kevin) Elen of Caledon, ON, Karen (James) Davis of Langley, BC, son Gary (Charlene) of Everett, ON, twelve grandchildren; Tyler, Nicole, Ashley, Kyle, Shawn, Kelsey, Ronni, Thomas, Austin, Alexandria, Zachary, Nathanial and his two great-grandchildren Jordan and Courtney. He is also survived by his brothers; Fred (Hazel), Gerard (Alice), Frank (Ellen), sisters; Jean (Ferd) Landry, Luella King, Monica (Joe) Andrea and his many nieces and nephews. 
Aside from his parents, Bernard was predeceased by his sister Bernice, brother Robert (Manny), brother-in-law Duncan King and his son-in-law Jim Prickette. 
Bernie joined the R.C.N. at the age of 17. He served for five years on three vessels, the Outremont, the Bonaventure and the Cormorant. Bernie then became part of the British Leyland Motors (Dartmouth) family. This led him to Jaguar Canada in Burnaby, BC, then to head office for Jag Canada in Brampton, Ontario. After 39 years of service Bernie retired in 2004 and moved back to the Maritimes in 2005. 
While in Dartmouth Bernie was heavily involved in Stock-car racing, he was an owner, driver and winner of many trophies, he was also a volunteer firefighter for many years. While he was in BC he enjoyed fishing, hunting and sleeping in a teepee and in Ontario he enjoyed many family events and sports. 
After moving to Salisbury Bernie became involved in the Salisbury Legion Branch 31. He served as 1st Vice, treasurer, and head of the poppy campaign over the past 10 years, helping in any way he could to support the legion and veterans. 
Visitation will be held at Fair Haven Funeral Home on Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 7 to 9pm with a legion service at 6:45pm. A Celebration of Life and reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Salisbury Branch #31 on Monday, April 25, 2016 from 2 to 4pm with Rev. Danny Compton officiating. Interment will take place in Fair Haven Cemetery.
A special thank you to all the staff at the Oncology Clinic and all the wonderful extra-mural nurses that helped so much with Bernie’s care. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Searle for her home visits and wonderful care as well as Vital Air for their home calls. Also to doctors: Salem, Pam Mansfield, Gordon Dow, Presard, Frenette and Rubin, we send all our thanks and appreciation for all your care. 
Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to Extra Mural Program Driscoll Unit and the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Oncology Clinic.
