With heavy hearts we regret to announce the unexpected passing of our father, brother, and dear friend, Mark George Ferris Sr., 61, on Wednesday, Apr. 20, 2016 in Fernie, B.C., surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, N.S. on Dec. 17, 1954, Mark was raised in a large, loving Lebanese family. He also had an extended family in Edwardsville, where he had a family home, a wife, and raised his two children. Mark was a prominent business man and an active member of the community. He owned and operated a multi-generational family business for 35 years. He played a large part in the protection and cleanup of the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Tar Ponds. Mark put his heart and soul into keeping our community healthy and clean for generations to come.
Mark loved the outdoors and was always looking for a new adventure. He found his new adventure in Fernie, B.C., there he rediscovered his love for music and being in peace with the Rocky Mountains. Mark made many new friends who welcomed him into their community where he lived for the last six years until God took him home.
Mark is survived by his son, Mark Ferris Jr., Sydney; daughter, Angella (Blaine) Ferris-Hunter and their son, Adam, Alberta. He is also survived by his sisters, Sheila (Hamish) Bugler, England and Deborah (Bob Hewitt) Ferris, Ont.; nieces, Shannon MacNeil and Valerie Ferris; nephew, Ferris Tobin; along with many more nieces, nephews, family and close friends.
Mark was predeceased by his parents, Ferris Joseph and Helen Marie Ferris and his brother, James Ferris.
Mark was cremated in Fernie, B.C. and taken home to his beloved Cape Breton, N.S. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Apr. 30, 2016, at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret’s Bourgeoys Church, Cabot Street, Sydney, with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at the Cedar’s Club, MacKenzie Street, Sydney.
