Lawrence Menzies

MENZIES, LAWRENCE "LAURIE" JOHN
1925 - 2016
It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Laurie Menzies, announce Dad's tragic passing by accident on Saturday night. We feel that Dad was put on this Earth for two reasons: to help and to serve others. He lived every day to the fullest, both in his professional career and his personal life. To know him was to marvel at his boundless energy. There are just so many "Laurie" stories.
He will be sadly missed by his son, Allan Menzies (Bridget); daughters, Susan Menzies and Cindy Trask (Terry); grandchildren, Heather Menzies (Greg), Ian McFarlane (Alicia), Thomas Trask (Chelsea) and Lesleigh Trask (Ben); great-grandchildren, Ava Moore and Callie McFarlane. We also want to include his close friend, Tim Gillies, who shared so many great moments with Dad in his later years.
Laurie was predeceased by his parents, Allan and Margaret Menzies; his wife, Miriam, whom he loved with all his heart; brothers, Ron and Norris and sisters, Molly and Phyllis.
Dad was a lifelong resident of Fredericton following in his father's footsteps. He entered the profession of prosthetics and orthotics in 1943 at the age of 18 following the death of his father who founded the business in 1920. He and his brother, Norris, carried on the business and Dad became president of A.R. Menzies and Sons Ltd. in 1968. He passed the reins on to his son Allan in 1989 but continued as an integral part of the business for many more years. He still came into "work" every day until the day before his passing.
He was a member of the Fredericton Rotary Club, Fredericton Society of St. Andrews, I.O.O.F. Lodge, YMCA, Ducks Unlimited, Golden Club and UCT. He belonged to the Hiram Lodge #6 (F.&A.M. NB), Consistory (Scottish Rite) - Valleys of Fredericton and Saint John, Luxor Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. - Maxwell Lodge of Prefection, Luxor Arab Patrol and Fredericton Shrine Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Saint John Court (149). Dad was a founding member of the Fredericton Minor Hockey Association and proudly coached his midget team to a Provincial Championship. Dad also loved curling. In 1979, he skipped his senior team to a second place finish at the Nationals in Noranda. He was a member and Past President of the Capital Winter Club and a member of the Fredericton Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of the Atlantic Salmon Association and a Life Member of the Miramichi Salmon Association. Dad's second home was on the Little Tobique River at Bear Brook Lodge for over 50 years. Hunting and fishing played a minor role in relation to the number of 45's card games played with his closest friends. By the nature of his work, Dad was involved in services to those with physical impairments. He was a former president of the Canadian Rehabilitation Council for the Disabled and also Vice President of the National Association. Dad was also a founding member of the Elm City Wheelchair Sports Club. He was honoured as a Life Member of both the Canadian Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists and the Canadian Board for Certification of which he was a founding member (1968). In 1993, he was honored with the Governor-Generals 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal and in 1994, Dad received the Distinguished Citizen Award sponsored by the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and served as Chairman in 1987 and 1996.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A private Masonic tribute will be held for family. A memorial service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dr. Terry Atkinson officiating. A reception will be held in the church followed by interment in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, Chalmers Hospital Foundation, YMCA or to the donor's choice. www.mcadamsfh.com
