SURETTE, Henry Louis – age 71, passed away Sunday, May 8th at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by family after a battle with cancer. Born April 1945, he was the son of the late Ben and Yvonne Surette. He lived his entire life in Pinkney’s Point, where he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine (Doucette). Henry was a fisherman and played an instrumental role in the industry on and off the water. Among other things he was a member of the Auxiliary Coast Guard for over 25 years. He was a past president of the Maritime Fishermen’s Union, a member of the LFA 34 Lobster Advisory Committee and a member of the Coast Guard Advisory Council in Ottawa. He received a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award for the development of waste oil collection barrels at wharves across Canada and the United States. He helped in the design and implementation of the *16 feature for the cellular network to provide mariners with a sense of security. He helped organize a USA-Canada organization called the North Atlantic Lobstermen Coalition. He received a Governor General of Canada Award for his work on behalf of the fishery. He was also recognized by an American institute for his design of a method aimed at freeing whales that become entangled in rope. Henry was a caring and generous friend and family man, proud of his children and grandchildren. He had a witty sense of humour. Even during his final weeks of life he maintained his sense of humour, continuing to make those around him smile and laugh. He liked playing golf, was a strong Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, and enjoyed watching hockey at the Mariners Centre, especially hockey played by his grandsons. Besides his wife Elaine, he is survived by his sons, Warren and Greg (Tina); his daughter, Kim; his grandchildren, Jacob, Brianna, Justin and Cameron; his sisters, Jean Appleby, Joyce Boudreau (Louis), Sandra Cottreau (Reg) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ann Surette and Estelle Moulaison. Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, where visitation took place on Tuesday, May 10th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11th at Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, Father Henry Smolenaars officiated. Burial followed at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery, Pinkney’s Point. The family would like to thank Dr. David Webster and the nurses on the 3rd and 4th floor of the hospital for their care of Henry.
