On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, June 12, 2016, my mother passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, N.S. at age 96.
Annie was born Oct. 22, 1919 in Halifax, N.S. to John J. and Rosalind (Pangborn) McHale.
Annie was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Carman and her husband, Joseph. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Betty Anne and her husband, John Christoff, Glace Bay; granddaughter, Kelly, Ont; grandson, Jason, Toronto, and granddaughter, Ashley, Sydney.
Annie started her working life at an early age, working in Glebe houses and convents from Halifax to Glace Bay. She retired from St John’s Convent in New Aberdeen when her husband Joseph took ill, to look after his daily needs. Upon Joseph’s passing she devoted her time and love to help raise her grandchildren.
She was a member of the former St. John’s Church, a member of St. John’s CWL and St. Ann’s Society. A woman of great faith, she worked tirelessly for her church.
My mother was blessed with wonderful neighbors. That is one reason why she could maintain her independence in her own home for so long. Annie enjoyed Thursday afternoons with the Ladies Bowling Team at Knox Bowling Lanes. She enjoyed her weekly trips to Superstore with her friends, Mary MacNeil and Delores Young.
A special thank you to her family physician, Dr. Puppala, staff of the ER, Glace Bay and the staff of 3rd Floor, 3A, who took such excellent care of her.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 15, from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 16, 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Main Street. The Rev. Leo Boone will be officiating. The interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay.
