HERSEY, Gilbert Fowler of Port Maitland, passed away on June 20, 2016, Veteran's Place, Yarmouth with his family at his side. Born in Port Maitland on April 13, 1925 he was the son of the late George and Estella (Churchill) Hersey. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife Ona (Clayton), brothers Borden, Burton, Floyd, Ross in infancy, and sisters Lois, Doris and Edith. He is survived by daughter Diane, son Earl (Sandra), grandson Chad (Kerry), granddaughter Kora (Greg) and great grandchildren. He was a veteran of WWII as Flight Sergeant having joined the Canadian Air Force in 1942 and went overseas in July 1944. He was stationed at Greenspire, England, Squadron 100 as a rear gunner in a Lancaster and shot down over Germany and held as a prisoner of war at Stalag 17-A. Dad was a member of the Caterpillar Club and received the caterpillar pin which was presented to those who jumped from a burning aircraft relying on the silk parachute to save their lives. He was a past member of the Port Maitland Fire Department and was Fire Chief from the years 1946-1955. He was owner/operator of the feeder line school bus that covered the areas of Cedar Lake, Springdale and Woodstock, worked in the fish industry and mink ranch with his brother Borden, was Secretary-Treasurer of Port Maitland Co-Operative Lobster Company, and in 1971 was sworn in as postmaster for the local post office and retiring in 1990. He was a member of IOOF as an Oddfellow and of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #143 where he enjoyed playing pool with his friends. He was a resident of Gentle Care Seniors Boarding Home for many years. In November 2014 he moved to Veteran's Place. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and volunteers at Veteran's Place and to staff of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth where visitation was held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 7-9 and a Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service was held Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Don Moses officiated. Burial was at the Port Maitland Beaver River Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to that cemetery, Tri-County VON, or charity of choice.
