It is with heavy hearts, while surrounded by his loving family, that we announce the passing of Gerald O’Neill on July 10, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Sydney, N.S.
Born in Glace Bay on July 28, 1930, Gerald was the son of the late Augustus and Anastasia (Campbell) O’Neill.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jessie (Morrison) and his five children, Kevin (Mary Lou), Keith (Mary), Ken, Janice, Derek (Nancy); nine grandchildren, Stephen, Caitlin, Lauren, Anne, Terri, Rachael, Marissa, Erin and Emma. He is also survived by his sister, Carmella (Rannie Campbell).
Gerald was predeceased by siblings, William, Francis, Hugh; Sr. Ann O`Neill, Augustus and infant Ignatius and infant sisters, Margaret and Teresa.
Gerald was employed by the Cape Breton Development Corporation from 1949 until 1987 when he retired as a railway dispatcher in 1987. Upon retiring, Gerald was as an active volunteer in the community with roles in the St. Anne’s/Saint John`s Cemetery Committee and the Glace Bay Historical Society. In 1991, Gerald received an award from the Province of Nova Scotia for Exceptional Volunteer Service in the Town of Glace Bay.
A strong family man and devoted husband Gerald also had a strong belief in our Lord`s eternal love. Gerald had a passion researching family genealogy and horticulture. As a youth, Gerald played both hockey and rugby. His interest in hockey as an adult led him to maintain a community outdoor rink on his property in Glace Bay from 1967 until 1997.
Gerald`s family would like to thank the medical staff on 4B and the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their compassion and caring.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10 a.m. Reception will take place in the church following services.
