It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Michael McKenzie on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Port Morien, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary Agnes (Pickup) MacKenzie. Michael attended St. Anthony’s School where he was a boy scout, altar boy and a member of the band. He served in the Second World War aboard the HMCS Montreal. After the war he studied architectural drafting and went to work for Nova Scotia Light and Power Halifax. He then moved to Glace Bay and worked for Devco until 1960 then he worked as a mail courier till 1965. He returned to Devco, but took early retirement. Michael was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 3, where he served as president and treasurer and ran the crib games with his wife Dot. He was known for calling bingo with the men’s club and was very active with St. Anthony’s Church as chairman of the building and grounds committee as well as the cemetery. He would design many house plans for people in the Cape Breton area and he entered numerous competitions where his design was chosen for many legions and Cape Breton Transit.
He is survived by his son, Michael Douglas (Jaevaius) MacKenzie; sister, Eunice MacKenzie; grandchildren, Brenda Marie, Kathryn Ann, Michael Joseph MacKenzie; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan, Leita, Chayse, Rayne; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hutt and Hazel Mason.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy ‘Dot’; infant brother, John James; sisters, Kaphlene, Sr. Carmelita; stepbrother, Joseph Burns.
There is no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, July 18, at Holy Cross Church. The Rev. Norman MacPhee will be officiating. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or Holy Cross Church.
