Well known Kentville resident and long-time Town Councillor passes away
Nola Ellen Folker-Hill – 63, of Kentville, passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 4, 2016 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was the daughter of Lila (DeAdder) Folker, Grand View Manor, Berwick and the late Burton Folker. She was a graduate of Cornwallis District High School, Canning, where she was involved in various activities. She was then employed as Lab Manager at the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville and then the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville for a total of 25 years. She then founded and operated Nu-labb Service and Consulting, a home blood collection service, of which she was very proud. Nola was a life-long resident of Kentville and the longest serving member of the current Town Council (16 years), serving since 2000. She was a member of several medical laboratory associations, including the Board of Directors of the NSCMLT (Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists). She was the Chair of the Kentville Police Commission and a member of the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Police Governance. She was Past Chair of the Central Kings Community Health Board, and a member of the Kings Community Economic Development Agency and the Kentville Economic Planning Advisory Committee. She was also the current Chair of the Kings Point to Point transit society and a representative on the Student Advisory Committee & Youth Organization. An accomplished musician, she enjoyed playing and singing at many functions. She was also a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. A kind and loving daughter, wife and mother, Nola was devoted to her family, friends and community. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 30 years, Clifford; a daughter, Kara, Toronto; a son, Evan, Kentville; a brother, Gary (Helen), Toronto and their sons, Michael and Adam; several other nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, Father John MacPherson and Father Gerald Saulnier officiating. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Following the burial, a reception was held in St. Joseph’s Parish Hall. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital – Carey Me Fund (for palliative care in the home) or the charity of your choice.
