Catherine (Kaye) RIGA
Lieu de naissance : GLACE BAY
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Catherine (Kaye) Riga, age 88, on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax, NS. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (MacKinnon) MacEachern. A graduate of Normal College in Truro, NS, Kaye taught at St. Anthony’s School in Glace Bay. After years of teaching, she married her beloved Hector and together they owned and operated Riga’s Spaghetti Shop, the Skyline Club and later the Marconi House Beverage Room and Grill until their retirement.
Kaye was a woman devoted to her faith, family and friends. She served several ministries within the Church and was actively involved in the Catholic Women’s League, St. Anne’s Sodality and The Carmelites. She was a constant source of support for her family, whom she loved deeply and unfailingly, and adored hearing every detail about the lives of her grandchildren. Up until the time of her passing, she remained an avid sports fan with basketball, baseball, hockey, curling and equestrian events among her favorites. She also continued to enjoy a lively card game and her lifelong love of books never waned, with her prayer books and cook books being the most cherished and well-used of her collection. She was warm, welcoming and possessed a keen sense of humour. Ever a teacher at heart, she was encouraging to all. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff, volunteers and residents at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home for their care, compassion and friendship. Left to mourn her passing are her children, Stella (Cha) Keliher, Anne (Brian) Snow, and John (Monique) and grandchildren, CJ, Ryan (fiancé Siobhan Boyle), Michael (Margaret) Keliher and Eric and Nicole Snow. She is also survived by her sister Mary MacEachern and numerous nieces and nephews. Kaye was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Hector; her son, Paul, in infancy and brothers, John and Steve.
There will be no visitation by request. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Monday, August 29, St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. A reception to follow.
