Rita Thérèse MacDonald, age 88, of Valley View Villa, formerly of Emmanuel Street, New Glasgow passed away September 15, 2016, in the Villa.
Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Mary Bridget (McCarron) MacDonald.
You felt her warmth as soon as you saw her smile. She approached life with common sense and compassion, both in her work at MacKenzie’s Drug Store in New Glasgow and in later years with her brothers at MacDonald’s Drug Store in Antigonish, as well as in her volunteer work with the Pictou County Food Bank and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, where she also was a choir member. She also knew how to have fun. She spent many happy summers at the cottage she shared with good friends at Melmerby Beach. She was a competitive bowler and travelled the country with her beloved teammates. She loved a good laugh shared with family and friends and taught us all the value of putting things in perspective.
She is survived by her brother Edward, Ottawa; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Mary Frances, Alexander (“Sandy”), Kathleen, Ian, Leo, Eunice and Donald.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016, in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday September 24, 2016, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A special thanks to the staff of Valley View Villa for their loving care.
