It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and lifelong friend, Catherine Florence MacDougall, at the age of 94, on September 19, 2016, at home in Sydney Mines. Born in Florence on May 8, 1922, Catherine was the daughter of the late Jonathan and Christena (MacAskill, Livingstone) MacInnis. She married our father, Neil J. MacDougall, on November 28, 1940. Upon his death in 1974, Mama raised the remaining 6 children at home by herself. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Everyone loved her homemade bread and cookies. She fed everyone who came to her door. You couldn’t leave until you had a cup of tea and something to eat. Catherine is survived by her children, Adrian, PEI, Monica, Halifax, Neil (Marilyn), Boularderie, Genevieve, Halifax, Christena (Richard) Hall, Halifax, Georgina (Tommy) Buffett, Bras d’Or, Brian, Mexico, Leo (Carolyn), Squamish, BC, Hugh James (Betty Lou), Sydney Mines, Marguerite (Dave) Rushton, John, and Alex (Arlene), all of Dartmouth. She is also survived by sister, Gen Davies, Halifax, and sister-in-law, Edith MacInnis, Sydney Mines; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Neil; son, Bernard; sisters, Mamie Carmichael, Ena Cross and Marjorie Towers and brothers, David Livingstone, A.C MacInnis and Alexander (Sandy) MacInnis. We would like to thank the Northside Homemakers office staff and CCA’s, for their exemplary care of Mama over the last 20 years. Special thanks to Wendy Boyd; she considered you her dear friend. To her caregivers, Sylvia, Liz, Peggy and especially Keitha, who was her companion, confidante and whom Mama considered part of the family for the past year and a half. Thanks also to the Palliative Care and VON, your compassion and professionalism was very much appreciated. Visitation for Catherine MacDougall will be held Sunday, September 25, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place Monday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery.
