With broken hearts, we are sad to announce the sudden passing of Douglas ‘Doug’ John Chapman on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness. Born on April 22, 1946 in Toronto, Ont., Doug was the son of the late Albert and Joan (Mansbridge) Chapman. Everyone who met Doug was instantly drawn to his warm and caring personality and witty sense of humour. He was a quiet and caring man who always put the needs of others before his own. Even during his illness, he never complained about the enormous pain he was in and would put on a brave face when family and friends would visit, even still making them laugh. Doug spent most of his working life in the gaming/casino industry and it was a job at Casino Nova Scotia Sydney that lured him to Cape Breton over 20 years ago. He loved his job, the people he worked with and the patrons he met. There was no employee more committed and dedicated than Doug. He also had many years of service in the jewelry and floral industries in Calgary, AB. Doug enjoyed the simple things in life. His favourite pastimes were feeding the ducks and walking in Wentworth Park and his weekly walks and coffee trips with his stepdaughter, Nicole. He loved to travel and camp and was an avid reader. It was his love of reading that made him amazingly worldly and full of knowledge. Doug is survived by his loving and caring wife, Nancy Aboud, who took enormous care of him at home during his final weeks; step-children, Nicole and Crystal Aboud; grandchildren, Xavier and Lena Ellis; niece, Kristina Miethner and grandnephew, Dean, both from Toronto, Ont. He is also survived by his furry best friend, Whiskers, who gave Doug so much joy and laughter; as well as many sisters, brother-in-laws and close friends. As per Doug’s wishes there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. There will be a private family interment at a later date to fulfill Doug’s request. In lieu of flowers, Doug asked that donations be made to the SPCA or to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. Doug will be deeply and greatly missed by his family and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. We love you Doug, your pain is now gone and you are at rest in peace. Till we see you again.
