New Glasgow - Charles Bernard “Bernie” Chabassol, age 93. It is with great sadness that we, the family of Bernie Chabassol announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and dear friend. Bernie passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 12, 2016, in Glen Haven Manor.
Bernie was born in Westville, Pictou County on November 8, 1922.
Although very proud of his Westville birth right, Bernie was extremely proud of raising his family on St. Theresa Street in the tight knit community of New Glasgow’s North End. Bernie loved his little neighbourhood and was very proud of the fact that he could live independently in his home until recently.
Bernie started his trade as a machinist at I. Matheson Co. in New Glasgow where he worked for many years. From there, he worked as a Millwright at Scott Maritimes until his retirement.
Bernie was a loving, kind and generous person who always put everyone else before himself. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered by all for his kind and gentle nature. Bernie was admired for his great memory of dates and details.
He was the son of the late Augustus Peter Chabassol and the late Margaret (McMullen) Chabassol. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of fourteen brothers and sisters.
Bernie is survived by daughters, Reynelda (Bob) Cameron, Lorneville, NS; Bernadette (Peter) Van Kessel, New Glasgow; sons, Joe (Cyndi) Chabassol, Moncton, NB; Rob (Cheryl) Chabassol, Lyons Brook, NS; grandson, Brent Cameron, Lorneville, NS. Bernie will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend Sally (Gormley), his sisters: Catherine, Reta, Mary Anne (Mae), Theresa, and infant sister Sadie; his brothers: Roderick, Adrian, Francis, James, Peter, Reginald, Augustus, and twin brother Arator.
No visitation by Bernie’s request. A public funeral mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 15 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Cremation will take place with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Bernie’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
