It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of my Aunt, Genevieve Kennedy (84), who passed away Tuesday, October 18 at Cedarstone Advanced Care, Truro, N.S. Born in Glace Bay, N.S, January 11, 1932, Gen was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Curry) Kennedy. Gen grew up in the New Aberdeen area of Glace Bay and lived most of her working life in the West end of Toronto. She began her career as a teacher, eventually moving into assessments and finally ended her education career in speech pathology. After retiring Gen obtained her Sommelier Certification and went on to conduct teaching seminars and wine tours to wineries in Canada and abroad. She was also an active member of the Wine Writers Guild of Toronto and wrote a wine appreciation column for the Bloor West Villager, a community newspaper. Gen was an avid traveller and was fortunate enough to travel to most of this world during her lifetime.
Gen is survived by her loving niece, Beth Wilson (Glace Bay), with whom she resided prior to entering a nursing home; sister, Nouncie (Rogez), Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Josephine (Melnick), London and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sisters, Anne (Wilson), Eileen (Bannon), Pauline (Burkman), Mary Kennedy and by brothers, Duncan, Francis and Finley. She was also predeceased by her niece, Mary Wilson. I would like to thank the staff at Parkland and Cedarstone, especially the nurses on Eden Wing at Cedarstone Enhanced Care for the dedication, caring and kindness that they consistently showed my Aunt. By request there was no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016 in the chapel of St Anne’s Church, Main Street, Glace Bay at 10 a.m.
