ELIZABETH ANN (BETTY) RUDDERHAM ELIZABETH ANN (BETTY) RUDDERHAM

Lieu de naissance : BRIDGETOWN
Date de naissance : 11 septembre 1932

Lieu de décès : PARRSBORO
Date de décès : 3 novembre 2016

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Rudderham, of Point Edward passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016 in the South Cumberland Community Care Center, Parrsboro at the age of 84. She will be missed by many. Betty was born in Bridgetown on September 11, 1932, daughter of the late Carolyn Stowe (Ruffee) and Redvers D. Wells and step daughter to Phyllis Harding. Betty graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Halifax Infirmary in 1956 and married the recently graduated Engineer, Robert Rudderham in 1957. While Robert was in the Air Force, they lived in many places across Canada, until they eventually settled in Cape Breton, where they raised their family and lived for over 53 years in Sydney and Point Edward. Most of those years were in a new home they built in 1972 in Point Edward. Betty’s passion and joy was in being a mother, grandmother, and home maker. Betty kept an immaculate home and she was described by many as the ‘best cook on the planet’. She often and graciously opened her home to all visitors, some from around the world. Betty enjoyed her family and socializing with friends, especially over a game of Tarabish, Bridge, Rummoli or 45’s, not to mention kitchen Ceilidhs, yard-sales, and her volunteer work with Meals-on-Wheels. Betty was very well known for her big heart, generosity, and strength of character. Most of all, Betty enjoyed her family, her husband of over 59 years, her children and many grandchildren. As Betty became a grandmother several times she assumed the loving nickname of Ninny, preferring not to be called Nanny or Grandma.
Betty is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) and her seven children, John (Jean), Cathy (Joel Smith), David (Charlene), Paul (Eva), Thomas (Judy), Ellen (Charles Gaudet) and Joseph (Shelley).
As well, Betty is survived by 18 grandchildren, Chelsea, Robert, David, Oliver, Elizabeth, Jordan, Corey (Marlena), James, Tara (Jerome Pelletier), Brianne, Adrianna, Michaela, Joseph, Stéphane, Sam, Jennah, Melanie (Aziz Alfadli) and Meghan (Ray Hopwood); as well as great-grandchildren, Skye, Lincoln, Macey and two others on their way. Betty is also survived by her two sisters, Cynthia (Matt Spence) and Phyllis Wells and many nephews, nieces and in-laws. Betty is predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan Christina and two siblings, Redvers “Junior” Wells and Mary Wells-Loss. A special thanks from the family to the caring staff at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre (Long Term Care) and to daughter Cathy for providing extra comfort and care during Betty’s final days. A Funeral and Celebration of Life service will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home in Parrsboro on Saturday November 12, 2016 at 11 a.m. For those many friends in Cape Breton, a memorial and celebration will be held in Point Edward at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences can be made at www.smithsfuneralhome.com.
