It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Michael James ‘Jimmy’ Smith on Wednesday November 23, 2016.
Born in Sydney, Jimmy was the son of the late Donald and Annie (MacInnis) Smith. Jim was the kindest, sweetest, most gentle creature to walk this earth. He met everyone with a smile, a joke and a hug second-to-none. A man of few words, Jim was anything but ‘rotten’, he spoke only words of wisdom and wit. He had a passion for the arts being a long-time supporter of local music, as well as being a brilliant artist and guitarist himself. He was well known in the community for his highly anticipated Halloween creations, which gave us just a glimpse into his deep and wild imagination. At the end of the day nothing meant more to Jim than his family, he exuded a vibrant light and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Jimmy will be sadly missed by his wife, Nancy (DeBreau) Smith and daughter, Michelle Smith; son-in-law, Darren Fraser; daughter-in-law, Allison Smith (Jon) and 3 beautiful grandbabies, Noah, Amy and Jeremy; sisters and brothers, Kay (Junior), Donnie (Connie), Lou (Tom), Martin, Robbie (Pat); brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis (Dorothy), Joyce (Moe), Wayne (Pat), Lawrence (Rita) and Heather. Nieces and nephews, Brenda, Patti, Donnie, Tracey, Tammy, Hector, Glenna, Alton, Shawna, Kerry, John-Blair, Rose, Lawrence Jr., Darren, Diane and Glenn (Michelle). Besides his parents, Jimmy is predeceased by his son, James Joseph ‘Jay’ Smith, March 2013. Visitation for Jimmy will be held on Friday November 25, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held the following day, Saturday November 26 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Parish with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.
