John Allister “Al” MacLeod passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Thursday November 24, 2016, at Rapelje Lodge, Welland, Ontario on his 95th Birthday.
Born in Sydney, he was the eldest son of the late John E. “Jack” and Margaret (Ferguson) MacLeod.
During WWII he was stationed overseas with the Canadian Army where he served proudly.
He lived in Ontario for a number of years. A Machinist by trade, he worked for Continental Can for 11 years before joining Carling O’Keefe Breweries (now Molsons) where he retired in 1986 after 26 years. Among his many interests were music, dancing, skating, a good game of golf, and supporting the Toronto Maple Leafs. His greatest pleasure was spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Returning to Sydney in 1990 he was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12 Sydney, Long Branch Legion 101, Toronto, then Branch 4 in Welland where he had returned to reside near his son and daughter in recent years. He was predeceased in 2002 by his wife, Charlotte (Burns); sister, Marion Bond; brothers, Morris, Ralph and Earl.
He leaves behind his three loving children; daughter, Margaret (Bob) Carrier, Welland, ON.; sons, John (Elizabeth), Kelowna, BC. and David (Ruby), Toronto, ON.; four grandchildren, Kevin and Karen Carrier, Michael (Kara) MacLeod, Leisha (Ross) Jolly; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Brooke, Abigail, Breanna and Isla; a sister-in-law, Dean MacLeod and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Visitation will take place Thursday, December 1, from 1-2 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel, followed by a Funeral Service at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations to the Veterans Comfort Fund would be greatly appreciated by the family.
