It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of William ‘Bill’ Bussey of Louisbourg, on December 2nd, 2016. Born December 7th, 1950, Bill was the son of the late Ernest and Ruth (Bagnell) Bussey. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Dianne (Gray) Bussey; his children, Jennifer (Fabian McKenzie), Laura (Jason McManaman) and Alison (Jeff Mills). He is also survived by his sister, Helen Lahey; brother, Dave (Colleen) Bussey and brothers-in-law, Glen (Joan) Gray and Gary ‘Zeke’ Gray. Bill was proud Grampy to Abby, Avery, Aaron, Emily, Evan, Keigan, Kalum and Katie. Bill also leaves behind many other family and friends. Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by mother and father-in-law, Muriel and Curly Gray and brothers-in-law, Morley Lahey and Dave Gray. Bill loved Louisbourg and was well-known for his community involvement. He was active in Louisbourg Little League for many years as a coach, umpire and later president of the association. He was the president of the first Leo (Junior Lion’s) Club in Nova Scotia. Bill played and later coached Juvenile Hockey. For many years he was president of the Louisbourg Home and School Association. He was a former president of Stella Maris Parish Council and served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister in the church. Bill had a long association with Branch 62 Legion (Louisbourg), having held numerous offices including president. He was especially passionate about the annual poppy campaign and Remembrance Day service. Bill had been involved with the Cape Breton Veteran’s Comfort Fund and enjoyed visiting veterans at Harbourview Hospital. Bill was a founding and still active member of the Louisbourg Volunteer Ambulance Association. For the past 20 years, he was not only a dedicated member of the Louisbourg Crabfest Committee, but also an innkeeper for many Crabfest-going ‘stragglers’. Inspired by his grandfather, the late Charlie Bagnell, Bill developed a life-long passion for the S&L Railway Museum, instilling this passion in his children and grandchildren (and anyone else who would listen…). He could often be found sitting on the front porch of ‘The Station’ chatting to tourists and locals alike. He and his friend, Bill Mullins, spent countless hours there shooting the breeze. Bill was a fixture behind the BBQ at the town’s annual Canada Day celebrations with his trademark statement, ‘We burn ‘em the way you like ‘em!’ A true ‘blue’ politician, Bill was always interested in politics at many levels. In 1988 he was elected to Louisbourg Town council and served there until amalgamation. He was involved with many aspects of council, especially Social Services, Recreation, Planning Commission and Louisbourg ’95. Bill was also a member of the Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg Progressive Conservative Association and had served as secretary. He was recently honoured with the John J Abbass Lifetime Membership Award for his contributions to the Association. He enjoyed watching politics on TV, especially Question Period on Sundays.
A teacher by profession, Bill had an impact on innumerable lives. He began his teaching career in the outport of Ming’s Bight, Nfld in 1972. He spent 3 years there and was instrumental in getting a new school for the community. After returning to Cape Breton, Bill substituted in many schools. He taught at the Adult Schools in Sydney and Louisbourg and conducted Train the Trainer courses for firefighters. He also taught at Holy Angels, Sherwood Park, ending his career at Riverside. He loved being in the classroom and always enjoyed teaching students who needed extra support or encouragement. Bill enjoyed bird watching and helped organize the Christmas bird count and spring migration count in Louisbourg for several years. He also wrote a column called ‘For the Birds’ in the local newsletter ‘The Louisbourg Seagull’. He always ended his column with ‘Life is short. Don’t get your feathers ruffled.’ Advice to live by.
