The family of Alicia Marie Thorne (Skinner), a resident of MacGillivray Guest Home and former resident of Coxheath, are sad to announce her passing on December 4, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Alicia was the daughter of the late John and Christina Skinner of New Waterford. She attended schools in Glace Bay and later New Waterford where she lived until her marriage in July 1952 to the late George E. Thorne formerly of North Sydney. George predeceased his wife in July 2011.
Due to her generous spirit and gentle kind personality Alicia was loved by many.
During her lifetime Alicia willingly gave her time to many volunteer endeavors including but not limited to the Cancer Society, Special Olympics, United Commercial Travelers and the S.P.C.A.
Alicia and George were responsible for bringing Special Olympics to Nova Scotia. For many years Alicia taught night school sewing classes at Riverview and also worked in the sewing department at Woolco in Sydney River. She was also a much sought after seamstress known for her skill at sewing wedding gowns. Alicia loved gardening and line dancing.
She was predeceased by her son, Hugh John, who died in 1972.
Her life will be cherished forever by her, sister, Joan Gibbs; nephew, John Charles of Chester, N.S.; her children, Joan Thorne of Surrey B.C., Elaine Manocchio, Mississauga, Ont, Bob (Patti) Thorne, Westmount, David (Terry Ann) Thorne, Sydney; grandchildren, John Paul (Tracie) Brown, Michael (Amber) Manocchio, Leanne (Derek) Manocchio, Vanessa Thorne (Justin), Chaylene Thorne (Matt), Tyler (Nicole) Thorne, Courtney Thorne (Brent); great grandchildren, Darnell Andries, Sienna Manocchio and Ariana MacDonald; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and neighbors, Jennifer and Wayne Pertus, Coxheath.
In honouring Alicia’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service.
The family would like to thank the MacGillivray Guest Home for their excellent care Alicia has received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society or the Special Olympics.
