Bessie “Irene” Morris passed away peacefully at the Parkview Place in Enderby on September 23, 2016 at the age of 92.
Irene was born in Moose jaw, Saskatchewan on June 7, 1924; to Buela(Bruce) and Fredrick James Knowles. She had 2 older brothers Harold & David.
Irene’s first childhood memories were of living in Regina, where her father was a railway engineer for the CPR. One of her fondest memories was of her father returning from a long trip and taking her and her brothers to buy new shoes. Irene enjoyed going to school also but could only attend to grade 8. As Fredrick prepared to retire from the CPR he moved his family to the Peace River area. Tragically on his last train trip, he had a heart attack and died.
At the age of 16, Irene was courted by Cyril Aubrey Morris, on his bicycle. They were married on august 16, 1940 in Berwyn Alberta. On April 19, 1941; they welcomed their first daughter Bula Jane and their second daughter Wanda Lorraine on December 9, 1943. The family moved to Dawson Creek, BC where Cyril began work for CN on the Alaska highway. Irene worked at various housekeeping jobs including the George Dawson Hotel & the Voyageur Motor Inn. She was involved with the Finn’s Corner Sewing Group which included Edith Knowles, Mrs. Finn, Robbir Robinson& Clara Cameron. Irene was also involved with Sons of Norway & attended the First United Church. Irene and Cyril also belonged to bowling leagues. Liane recalls Irene teaching her, her brother Eddie and cousins Blaine, Trish, Ray & Mike how to play baseball in the back yard.
Irene and Cyril moved to Penticton, where Irene worked in the hospitality industry while Cyril retired. In the late 70’s they moved to Kelowna where Cyril passed away in September of 1984, while Irene continued to work at the Capri Hotel until her retirement in 1987. Irene remained involved with the United Church and also the SPCA.
Later in years, Irene moved to Enderby so that Wanda & Don could watch over her. Her last years were spent at the Parkview Place Seniors Home where she enjoyed field trips, such as a boat ride, going bowling and doing crafts.
Predeceased by her 6 grandchildren; Blaine (Bernice) McRann, Charlie Lake; Trish (John) Greaves, Dawson Creek; Liane (Bob Ross)rling, Yellowknife; Ray (Jenny) McRann, Baytree; Mike (Jennifer Sutherland) McRann also of Baytree. Also 14 great grandchildren, 14 great, great grand children and 2 great, great, great grandchildren
