John ‘Jimmy Malcolm’ Gillis, 72 of Sydney, formerly of Southwest Margaree, passed away suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Jimmy Malcolm and Marion (MacDonnell) Gillis.
John worked as a Civil Engineer with N.S. Housing Commission, City of Sydney and CBRM. He was a volunteer with St. Theresa’s Parish Hockey, a founding member of An Tulloch Gorm Society and a member of APENS. He attended Xavier Jr. College, St.F.X. and TUNS. John will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his love of music, storytelling and gathering with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nina (Sampson); son, Brendan James; siblings, Margaret, Halifax, David (Joyce), Scotsville, Bernie (Mary), Fort McMurray, Mary MacNamara, Glace Bay and Donald (Etna), Belfast. John was predeceased by his son, Iain Joseph Gillis.
Visitation for Mr. Gillis will be held Monday, January 16 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating.
