Earl Harry Arthur MacKinnon – 84, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Grand Tracadie, PE, he was the son of the late John E. and Ada Violet (Roberts) MacKinnon. His early education was in a one-room school house in Grand Tracadie. He later attended Saint Dunstan’s University, Charlottetown, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish and the Nova Scotia Technical College, Halifax. During his university years, he was very athletic and was awarded a gold “T” from the Nova Scotia Technical College. He spent his entire working career as a Civil Engineer with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, from where he retired. He had postings in Amherst, New Glasgow, New Minas, Yarmouth and Middleton. Earl served as a former director of the Coldbrook Community Association. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Glooscap Curling Club, Kentville, where he served as Past President, and was instrumental in the construction and supervision of the fourth sheet of ice. Earl had a passion for junior curling and introduced the Little Rock Junior Program. He was instrumental in the organization of the Glooscap Junior Classic, which was later named the Earl MacKinnon Classic. He was also a former member of the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club as well as the Berwick Heights Golf Course. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna (Tompkins); two daughters, Charlene (Bob) Neilson, Centreville; Stacey MacKinnon (Randy Sandell), Halifax; two sons, Alan, Coldbrook; Stephen (Rose), Belleville, ON; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Corey and Timothy Neilson and Brandon MacKinnon; two step grandchildren, Amanda and Ryan Robson. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2017 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville, Nova Scotia.
