Donald M. Darby

The death of Donald M. Darby, husband of Maryena (Currie) Darby, occurred on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, peacefully with his family by his side. Born in Summerside, PEI, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mae Alberta (Wood) Darby. Don, aka Ducky, received his Bachelor of Commerce Degree in 1957 from Mount Allison University. In 1993 he retired as Operations Manager from Maritime Paper. Don lead a very active life; he enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, golf and had a love of hockey. His team won the Maritime Championship in 1950 which lead to their induction in the Summerside Sports Hall of Fame. His many family and friends from the Island will miss his spontaneous annual summer visits. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters: Karen (Rick) Winslow of Uxbridge, ON and Catherine Smith of Ellerhouse, Nova Scotia, his grandchildren: Emily and Alexander Winslow, Bradley and Taylor Smith, son-in-law Doug Smith, his brother David (Sue) Darby of Charlottetown, PEI, his nieces: Kathy Jarrell and family of Calgary, Elizabeth Paddon and family of Toronto, Joanne Meyer and family of Calgary and Jennifer Fernandez and family of PEI, he is also survived by many special friends at Seely’s Lodge, his breakfast buddies at Burger King and his fishing buddies at Balls Lake where he was a lifetime member. He will be missed by his loving family and the many life’s he touched through his association in the community through Kiwanis and Key Industries. At his own request, there will be no visitation or formal service. A celebration of Don’s life will take place at the Saint John Marina, 2050 Westfield Road on Monday, February 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Interment will take place in Prince Edward Island at a date to be determined. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the MS Society or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
